Ending the year on the right note

As the sun sets on summer, the weather and the colour of the leaves won’t be the only things that are changing. September 22 marks the fall equinox, the first day of fall and an important event in the astrological calendar. During an equinox, the amount of daylight is equal to the amount of night—something that only happens twice a year. “The zodiac year usually starts with the spring equinox—the sowing of seeds, the sowing of intentions. [The fall equinox] marks the harvest time of the zodiac year,” says astrologer Guadalupe Terrones. “Now is a time to take stock. It’s a really good time to reflect.” But keep in mind: Reaping what you sow can be either a positive or a negative experience, depending on the seeds that were planted. Find out what the fall equinox has in store for your zodiac sign.

Aries (March 21–April 19)

The biggest influence on Aries during the fall equinox will be the Mars retrograde. Mars, the warrior planet, rules over Aries, which is part of the reason this sign is so ambitious, strong and potentially combative. Terrones warns that this fall equinox will be a pivotal moment for all signs, but especially Aries. “Aries’ ruling planet is going in reverse for the first time in several years,” she explains. “On top of that, it is staying in retrograde in Aries, which is something that is not usual. [People born under this sign] are going to benefit the most from the equinox, but they’ve also been feeling so much pressure during this year.” Ultimately, they will have a choice to make about whether to use that sense of pressure to their advantage or to their detriment.

Taurus (April 20–May 20)

The fall equinox brings 2020 into the Libra season. The calming and judicious qualities of Libra are what will allow this period to be a great time of reflection, especially for Taurus. “Taurus, in particular, has been going through a lot,” Terrones says. “Taurus can be mentally heavy around this equinox because of the way that Mars is affecting them. It’s going to bring up a lot of their subconscious stuff, and that’s not always easy.” But with the intense Virgo season finally in the rearview mirror, Taurus should relish this opportunity to breathe.

Gemini (May 21–June 20)

In the modern era of social distancing, gregarious Geminis need to reflect on how they’re navigating their relationships. “It’ll be quite different for them,” Terrones notes, “because it’s going to teach them a lot about the kind of energy they place in certain people. It’s going to be a good lesson on where their energy should go in a social sense.” This may be a good time for Gemini to learn more about tact and who their friends really are.

Cancer (June 21–July 22)

Cancer, one of the cardinal signs, is poised to experience a welcome sense of relief during the 2020 autumn equinox. “This autumn equinox will be the final leg in the uphill battle that Cancer has been fighting against the energy opposite it in Capricorn,” Terrones explains. “There have been a lot of heavy planets in Capricorn affecting [Cancer] and causing them to do a lot of hard work.” Cancers will be ready to put the pitfalls and obstacles of this year behind them.

Leo (July 23–August 22)

Leos, typically outgoing and flamboyant, may not find the fall equinox to their liking. As a fire sign, their nature is generally opposed to introspection, and they’re already agitated by this year’s limitations. “They don’t necessarily thrive in the type of culture and the quarantine that we’re in right now,” Terrones says. Their desire to express themselves and be active will have to take a back seat for a little while, and that won’t be so comfortable.

Virgo (August 23–September 22)

Before the fall equinox on September 22, there will be a new moon in Virgo on September 17. “That is very, very good for all Virgos,” Terrones says, “in terms of setting intentions that are going to be long-lasting—if they take action.” After having a productive Virgo season, this transition into Libra will allow them to step back and take in all that they’ve accomplished. The payoff will be great, both figuratively and literally. “The Libra season will feel like a lot of rewards,” Terrones predicts, “and that’s because Libra rules their second house of finances and income.” The only catch is that Virgo, ever the busy bee and perfectionist, will need to figure out how to take that step back and simply enjoy it.

Libra (September 23–October 22)

“The autumn equinox,” Terrones says, “is the beginning of Libra season.” As such, Libras know better than anyone how to approach this time of reflection. This is where they thrive. However, adds Terrones, they should make sure to be as fair in their judgment of themselves as they are in their judgment of others. Libras are also great mediators, so they will be sought after during this time that can be uncertain or anxiety-inducing for other zodiac signs.

Scorpio (October 23–November 21)

The ever-passionate Scorpio will need to pump the brakes this equinox. “If they don’t take the time to rest, it is probably not going to be fruitful for them,” Terrones says. “That’s because Libra rules their 12th house, which is the house of the undoing and the subconscious mind.” Though it may be contrary to their nature, it would behoove Scorpios to mellow out a little and work behind the scenes.

Sagittarius (November 22–December 21)

Like Leo, Sagittarius prefers to go out and do, not sit down and think. “Sagittarius thrives on going after what they want and seeking out adventure,” Terrones says. “I think that they are going to have their energy placed or dispersed in a way that may not allow them—or they may not even want—to reflect.” It may benefit Sagittarius to take a more active approach to this, like doing meditative yoga, writing in a journal every day, or even doing some solo travelling.

Capricorn (December 22–January 19)

Capricorns will have a great bounty to harvest, assuming they spent the Virgo season wisely. While there will be great reward for their persistence and determination, they will also have to remember that their actions affect others. “There’s been a lot of energy in Capricorn, which has affected all of the cardinal signs in a different way,” Terrones explains. Around the fall equinox, part of self-reflection for Capricorns will be to think about what they’ve done—or haven’t done—for the people around them.

Aquarius (January 20–February 18)

Libra and Aquarius are both air signs, so Aquarius will literally be in its element this Libra season. The fall equinox will jump-start a period of inspiration for this zodiac sign. “We’re entering a very strong Aquarian energy,” Terrones says. “Saturn will reenter Aquarius by the end of the year. We’re moving into a stage of a couple of decades where air, the element, is going to be a resounding theme in all our lives.” Aquarius will not only feel at home but also empowered.

Pisces (February 19–March 20)

Pisces, a water sign, will be happy to emerge from the earth-dominated Virgo season this fall. However, that doesn’t mean they’re out of the woods. Pisces prefers to daydream or escape through art rather than engage in serious introspection. “With Pisces being one of the more resistant signs to practical thinking, they’re going to be placed like a fish out of water,” Terrones notes. It will be important to try to settle in and make sure that practical matters, such as finances, are taken care of before they kick up their feet and relax.
