The Reading List: 5 Books for June
Five new releases worth adding to your reading list this month.
1. Oceans Apart
TransAtlantic by Colum McCann
Three Atlantic voyages in three eras-one by a 19th-century abolitionist, one by a Second World War fighter pilot and one by a 1990s senator-come together in this new mile- and time-crossing novel.
2. Hero Worship
Superman by Larry Tye
Forget Krypton-this is Superman’s true origin story, a comprehensive cultural history following the man in tights as he evolved from a fledgling comic book character to a stand-in for American virtue and heroism. Great prep for the upcoming movie adaptation, and not a bad Father’s Day gift either.
3. Grim Fairy Tales
Unnatural Creatures: Stories Selected by Neil Gaiman
To coincide with the release of his new fractured fairy tale, The Ocean at the End of the Lane, Gaiman has curated this collection of macabre stories from writers such as Diana Wynne Jones and E. Nesbit.
4. Salt of the Earth
All That Is by James Salter
Now that he’s nearing 90, one of America’s great unsung novelists is getting the attention he deserved all along. His latest novel-the first in 34 years-is about hedonism, ambition and the male American Dream in the 1950s and ’60s. Familiar tropes, but the prose is so revelatory you won’t even care.
5. All About Eve
In the Body of the World by Eve Ensler
The Vagina Monologues writer bares even more in this intimate memoir, recounting her devastating encounters with rape and sexual violence in the Congo and her subsequent diagnosis of uterine cancer.
